An Open Letter To My Older Sister

To my big sister,

Ever since I was born, I wanted to be just like you. Throughout my life, you have taught me an infinite amount of valuable life lessons that changed me as a person forever. There are so many reasons why I am thankful for you and this letter is dedicated to you.

Thank you for the hand-me-downs.

From denim skirts to Barbie dolls, nearly everything I owned as a child was recycled. I know it must have been hard to let go of that novelty Baby Spice Barbie Doll, but rest assured knowing that I kept it in good care. I thank you for your generosity. Were it not for you, Mom would have had to buy everything twice.

Thank you for being my teacher.

You taught me everything I need to know about boys, tampons and how to get one over on Mom, (even though she would always catch us anyway. Moms just know.) Without your persistent guidance, I truly would have been lost. Thank you for the endless amount of life lessons.

Thank you for your patience.

Let’s be real- no matter how many lessons you teach me, I’m still going to screw up every now and then. However, your ability to stick by my side through thick and thin is something I will always be thankful for. I know it must have been hard dealing with the tag-along little sister, but your unfailing patience is something I admire about you.

Thank you for being my therapist.

Sometimes I need advice from someone who is not afraid to give me the harshest of realities. I can genuinely trust you with any of my issues. Thanks to you I have a life-long therapist, free of charge.

Thank you for setting an example.

As previously mentioned, I have always looked up to you. You are a natural born leader. You excel in everything you do, and it is something I have always envied. You set the perfect example of what I should always strive to be. Thank you for being my inspiration.

Thank you for being my best friend.

You were my first friend. Sure, we have our disagreements, but no matter what, I would do anything in the world for you. I thank God every day for blessing me with a best friend for life. I know it must have been aggravating to have me shadow your every move, doing all that I could to be “cool” like you. I thank you for not only tolerating me, but loving me unconditionally.

I know I don't tell you enough, but I love you more than words can describe. You have always kept me grounded when I lose sight of what's right. You have always kept me happy, despite all odds. I couldn't ask for a better big sister, and I thank you for all you have done for me.

With love,

Your little sister

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
