Mental illness is difficult to deal with. It's a lot harder than many people would expect. It's especially difficult when you're young, and struggling with both developing emotions, stress with parents and peers, and figuring out how to handle your own mental health.
I've been where you are. I was diagnosed with depression just before going into high school, and it's difficult to deal with a mental illness when you're not sure if what you're feeling is due to puberty or not. You have to deal with teachers and peers who may not understand mental illness and make things more confusing or hurtful. However, you will get through this. It won't be easy, but it is possible.
Don't be embarrassed to have a mental illness, because this isn't your fault. When it comes to physical illnesses like the flu or a cold, nobody feels embarrassed saying that they have to stay home or they are showing symptoms of their illness. Society knows that you cannot help a physical illness, so why should you be embarrassed to have a mental illness? While it's natural to feel different because of a mental illness, it's important to remember that it's not your fault and there's nothing to be embarrassed about.
People will be toxic, and it's okay to cut those people out of your life. Unfortunately, the mental health stigma is still rampant in our society, I made the mistake of letting these toxic people influence and manipulate me, and there are times when you have to cut people out of your life. While this may hurt, there will be people who come around who care about you and support you. Focus on those people, and focus on yourself.
Remember to take care of yourself. It's perfectly okay to take a break once in awhile. If you aren't up for something, it's okay to say no. Sometimes we all need a night to relax and de-stress. Whenever I go through a depressive episode, I distract myself by watching my favorite television shows or playing video games. This may not be the same for everyone, so try something new until you figure out what works for you. Also, try to be productive to the best of your ability, so you don't feel worse later. Listen to your mind and your body, and if you need to rest, do so.
When it comes time to ask for help, don't be afraid to reach out to who you can. While many people are rude and not understanding, there will be someone that's willing to help you. Fight for your healthcare because it is your right. Many people believe that you can just be cured when in actuality it takes work and many attempts. Don't be discouraged if you feel down one day or you feel like you aren't being helped. You can fight through this and it will take a few attempts. There are many different ways to get help, and if you can't get something remember that there are other alternatives.
Finally, remember that you're strong. Mental illness is something that is difficult to handle and you are strong for tackling it each day. Despite what people say, none of this is your fault, and you are not any worse for having a mental illness. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to be respected. Whenever you are feeling down, remember your inner strength. You will make it through the night, through high school or college and through life. I believe in you.
