An Open Letter To Odyssey Readers

An introduction into whatever this is.

Dear You,

Hi. It’s me. Yes, this is going to be one of those cheesy “if you’re reading this, you’re meant to be reading this” type thing, but what better way to start my Odyssey journey than with that?

For three days now, I’ve been pondering what to write this article about, I’m so indecisive. The perfectionist in me wants this article to be monumental, to be something I will look back on and say “yes, that was such a fitting topic to start off with.” But, even as I write this, I know there’s no such thing as a perfect topic, or rather, every topic you choose is perfect in itself because you’re putting your voice out there.

So, this article is instead, a welcome to my Odyssey page. A little reflection about who I am and what I’m doing here.

Truth is, I joined Odyssey on a whim. I’ve read countless articles in the past on lazy days and I’ve always enjoyed the authenticity that the writers seem to have in their articles. In fact, I’m going to stop using the word article, because a lot of the time they seem simply to be reflections, which I can relate to because reflecting is something I do often.

So reader, whoever you may be, I want to thank you for making it this far into my letter.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this jumble of words spilling from my brain. Hopefully, you’ll want to keep reading. I promise I’ll try to say something interesting.

My name is Sam and I am a Freshman at Villanova. No, I have no idea what I want to study, or who I want to be, but to me, life for me has always been more about experience than the end goal (part of me yelled at me as I was writing that because yes, I do care about where I’m going, but I’m trying to give myself time to figure things out).

I joined Odyssey because I want to share my voice. I am blessed to have wonderful people in my life who will listen to me. Still, I feel trapped in my thoughts at times, and want to reach out to a greater audience, to others who maybe are feeling the same way about a topic as I am. If I can make at least one person think “Wow. I never thought about it that way.” or “I totally get that”, then, to me, I’ve achieved what I came here for.

I am a constant thinker, a music lover, Gilmore girls fanatic, and an optimistic nerd (I just thought of that term and I think I kinda like it).

I don’t know exactly what I’m doing here, but I hope you’ll follow along as I try to find my way.

Give yourself a pat on your back if you made it to the end of my mumbo jumbo reflection. You did it! I did it! Talk to you all soon.

Xoxo,

Sam

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
