Dear America,
In light of recent events, it’s time to sit down and think about what we want as a country; regardless of who won the election. The results came as a shock to everyone, and for some, it was a slap in the face. The days that immediately followed felt like a mourning period, and while a good portion of our country celebrated, the other grieved over what was arguably the most high-stress election in American history. It was easy to see just how deep the cut in our country ran.
But it’s over now. The people have spoken, and the future of our country rests on two factors: President-elect Trump and the government, and the people; that’s us. So let’s talk, America. What do we want for our future and the future of generations after ours? Do we want a country divided, or One Nation? Do we want our children hearing a message of hate and fear and misogyny, in a country so proud of the liberties it offers to ALL its citizens? Do we want violence, regardless of whether it’s in the name of the president or against him? Because right now, that’s what’s happening. And it won’t stop until we decide to stop it.
There was no way everyone would have been happy with the outcome of the election. Hell, no one was truly happy with the options they were given to begin with. And now, in the midst of political unrest, the fact of the matter is that we can no longer let party politics divide us. We have to stop spreading hate; for one minute, forget your party and forget the government. Party-based thinking doesn’t help us. Stop the riots (because there’s a difference between protesting and rioting) and stop the violence on both sides. It’s time for us to band together and prepare to face whatever will happen next as ONE country; not as liberals and conservatives. Let’s stand up and show the world—because the world IS watching—that we won’t let one election send us into chaos. No matter what happens next, we can choose not to let it tear us apart…but that’s a conscious decision we have to make, and we need to make it now.
So what do you say, America? Let's stop the name-calling, the unfriending, the slurs and the violence.
Sincerely,
A Proud American Citizen
