An Open Letter To My Long-Distance Best Friend

Friends are the family that you get to choose.

An Open Letter To My Long-Distance Best Friend
Kelsey Thomas

To state the obvious, I miss you. Like, a lot.

From the time we met, we were basically best friends. We have been friends for years, even those awkward middle school years no one likes to talk about. From sixth grade through our senior year of high school, we saw each other almost every day. You know me better than anyone, and I feel like I know everything about you. We have each gone our own ways and have new friends now, but those relationships are somehow different than the bond we shared.

I want to say thank you, it's something I don't tell you often enough. Thank you for everything, from the small things, like telling me when an outfit is ugly, to the big things, like being my support system throughout middle school and high school. I wouldn't have been able to make it through those years without you. Even now, if I need something, even just someone to vent to, you're there for me, and I'm here for you, too.

"Love you like a sister" is a phrase that I take to heart. Though we aren't biological sisters, and we both joined different sororities, I truly do love you like a sister. You're like family to me, and I would do anything for you. My family considers you as one of us; you are always welcome at our house. We're comfortable enough at each other's houses to just help ourselves to whatever we need. Thankfully, we haven't fought like many biological sisters do, but we do share that inseparable bond and protectiveness of each other like sisters do.

I'm extremely proud of you. In middle school and high school, you had some pretty amazing accomplishments, and I was so proud to call you my best friend. However, it didn't stop there; you got into a phenomenal school, you were awarded scholarships, you're super involved in college, and you are so driven. You have big dreams for yourself, and I know without a doubt that you can achieve them; I know you will work to achieve what you want. Your ambition and work ethic inspire me to dream bigger, work harder, and be the best I can possibly be.

I knew going to different colleges would be hard, I just didn't realize how hard it actually would be to be separated. So, please, visit when you can, and I'll do the same. Though we don't see each other or even text much anymore, when we do, it's just as if nothing has changed at all. Just please, don't forget about me. It's easy to have the "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, but this friendship is one that is unique and irreplaceable. Anyone would be lucky to call you their friend, but I have the privilege of calling you my best friend.

Much love,

Your Best Friend Back in KY

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
