An Open Letter to the Dreamers

To those who dream beyond what the world can see.

An Open Letter to the Dreamers
Sabrina Foote

Have you ever felt that no one understood you or the way you think? Do you let your imagination run away with your brain? Does your heart avoid listening to reason? Do you see a world different from the one we live in and wish it could be your reality? Have you ever imagined something you once thought was impossible and seen it happen before your eyes?

If any of those questions speaks to you, then you are a dreamer. There are many different types of dreamers ranging from the ones who swim with mermaids, to the ones who want to dance with the fairies. There are even the dreams who see beyond our world, into the universe and imagine what might be there if we only looked. Then there are ones who look deep into the oceans and imagine what may lie down there that we haven’t seen yet.

Dreamers are those who think something is impossible and yet they still try. Even with the risk of failure.

Often, especially in today’s world, it feels as though everything is crashing down and that there is no good left in the world. Life is portrayed through a lens that only focuses on the negative things in life and pushes the good to the side. A viewpoint like this only perpetuates the feelings of darkness and despair, it begins to block out the light. This is where you, the dreamers, come in.

You see the world and all of the possibilities it holds, you can see beyond the wall that has been constructed by society and that is why you cannot stop. Dreaming is the force that pushes us forward, it is what drives us to discover the world around us. Take a second to imagine what it would have been like if the people in our history did not try to accomplish anything, what would it have been like if a smartphone was never invented? What about the ability to spread information across the globe?

At one point in time those were dreams but now they have become our reality.

Dreamers like you and I are what will push the future even further. When I was younger I was always told that I had an overactive imagination, I created worlds full of magic, creatures, and adventure. Now I use my “overactive imagination” and I see the world around me differently. You do too.

People out there may tell you that you need to keep your feet on the ground. That you need to remain focused on what is right in front of you because that is what is tangible, but you don’t need to do that. Use your imagination and your heart, reach for what others say is not possible because one day when you do succeed, you will feel something you have never felt before.

You do not need to have a big dream that will change the course of history. A dream of conquering your fear of public speaking, of changing your habits, or even a dream of proving to yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to, all count.

A dream is the future, even if it is just for tomorrow, it still drives the world on.

To all of the dreamers out there, I want you to keep dreaming. Imagine the craziest things you can and try for what you thought you never could. I know from experience that you can succeed, it will be hard and may even seem impossible, but you have to keep trying.

“In every moment there is the possibility of a better future.” This quote is from the 2015 movie Tomorrowland and I remind myself of it every day, because it is true and all of you dreamers should remember that.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
