Dear classmate,
First of all, I want to let you know you're smart, you're loyal, and I appreciate you. While we may only recognize each others’ existence in our class together, I value our friendliness. If it weren't for us sparking up small talk during the first day of class, our boring Tuesday-Thursday lecture would be ten times worse to sit through. Class is a struggle, but we make it through together. Who wants to go to a big lecture hall or stuffy classroom and sit by themselves? Nobody. I got lucky when I picked my “unassigned” assigned seat in the lecture hall because now I have a buddy to talk to during the many times our professor goes on tangents.
I’ll admit it, I didn't know your name for the first one and a half weeks of class. But as we talked more and I recognized we have the same level of hatred for the discussions in class, I made it a point to get to know you. We have bonded over missing the same assignments and hype each other up for the tests neither of us are prepared for. I appreciate having you as an acquaintance in class because we all need some inspiration to drag ourselves out of bed and go to class. Thanks for exchanging numbers with me and always responding to me when I ask for the notes from the class I missed. It’s comforting to know that while we are friendly with each other, and talk about lots of stuff, we never have to make plans to hang out outside of class. This casual friendship is something everyone needs to get through four years of college.
We have our own inside jokes we crack during class, ranging in topics from cute boys who sit in front of us to that annoying kid who always answers the professor’s questions. We have the same sense of humor, and that makes the time pass faster. Then the hour and 15 minutes are up, and its time to go our separate ways until the next day we have class. I am going to miss you when the semester ends and we may or may not have another class together, but that’s the circle of college life, and I know next semester’s classes you and I will find other classmates to befriend.
Good luck in the rest of your college career.
Sincerely,
The girl who sits next to you in class.
