To My Parents, This One Is For You As I Move Back To College
Summer Haran

Dear Mom and Dad,

It seems like just yesterday that it was May and we had three months to spend together. But now here we are, halfway through August, with just two weeks left until school starts up again. You know how excited I am to reunite with my friends from school and get back to my routine, I even have a countdown to move in day on my phone. But, as excited as I am to leave again, I am also very sad to have to say goodbye to you two.

Mom and Dad, thank you for putting up with me all summer long. I know what a pain in the a** I can be, but thank you for always being so understanding. It's hard to go from having total freedom and being able to do whatever you want while you're at school to having to abide by the rules of your parents while you're home for the summer. Thank you for always reminding me that while I am under your roof, I'll always have to follow your rules.

Thank you for listening to my endless ranting. You truly do have all the answers to my problems. Sometimes I take for granted how much my parents do for me. I never realized how hard it is to take care of a human being. Maintaining your grades at school, doing your laundry/keeping you room clean, cooking for yourself, staying in shape, and trying to have a social life is difficult to balance. I don't know how you two have managed to do it for me all these years.

I will miss coming home from work to a home cooked meal. I will miss getting in my car and seeing the gas tank magically full. I will miss finding a pile of my clean clothes because you noticed my laundry was full and decided to help me out. I will miss your hugs and your endless love and support. You always know what's best for me and how to guide me in the right direction.

Mom and Dad, as I pack my things for school and start saying my goodbyes I just want you both to know how grateful I am to have you as my parents. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend the college of my dreams. Thank you for giving me the independence and freedom to do whatever my heart desires. You have given me the confidence to move mountains. Through everything though, I know that you both will always have my back and be there to catch me when I fall. With you two by my side, I know that I can accomplish just about anything.

As excited as I am to get back to school, I am definitely not looking forward to laving you guys. I'll miss you more than anything and I'll probably call, text, and FaceTime you everyday. Although we are no longer going to be under the same roof, or in the same state for that matter, I will always need you guys in my life. I love you both to the moon and back. Thanksgiving will be here before you know it!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
