Dear MTV,
All throughout my teenage years, I watched you faithfully. My parents hated that I watched you for your really bad reality shows, and the even worse scripted series. I watched Jersey Shore like I was an over 21 Italian Guidette from Jersey. I watched your show "Awkward." because I felt super understand that Jenna was 100 times more awkward than I was. When I was super rebellious, I watched "My Super Sweet Sixteen" and quickly learned I was not nearly as rebellious as I thought I was. I watched "Next", "True Life", "Made", "Catfish", "Teen Wolfe", and most of all I watched "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom".
MTV I will be a 100% honest with you, watching "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" made me forever want to be a virgin. A lot of people believed that you glamorized teen pregnancy, but if they watched the show they'd know just how untrue it was. We saw people, teenagers, face adulthood, which didn't look fun at all. Overall, MTV you have done your best to keep things real when it came to "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom", which is why I think they were so popular. We saw how difficult the decision for Caitlyn and Tyler was to give Carly up for adoption. We saw how Farrah struggled with the death of Sophia's father. It was truly the harsh reality of what one mistake or careless decision could lead to.
On Monday, June 26, you aired a new episode of "Teen Mom OG." This season we have seen Ryan, the father of Maci's 8-year-old son, Bentley, struggle with addiction. Unfortunately, the cast has been no stranger to addiction when Amber struggled with her addiction. Although we saw Amber's fight, we saw the worst, we never saw her truly risking someone else's life, unlike Monday night's episode. As Ryan and his wife traveled to a wedding, MTV, you were able to capture him driving to the wedding high.
MTV, I'm upset because although you put a disclaimer for viewers, when you were setting up the cameras, you had to have known something was up. During those rides, you follow cast members, which means you condoned him driving under the influence. Not only did you condone it, you taped and showed viewers his wife riding with him high. You showed viewers not only did you condone other people's toleration of drug abuse, but also you did nothing to intervene. What makes me upset is that someone outside of that vehicle could have gotten hurt. Never when watching the show have I ever questioned producers, but after watching that I truly thought, "what are they doing?"
While watching him drive for what felt like forever, I was nervous and uneasy the entire time. I know drug addiction isn't supposed to be comfortable or something that is easy, but MTV, you accepted his decision to put others in danger. You accepted it, and showed viewers that his decision had no consequences. As a reality show, you luckily, didn't show the reality of what could have happened due to his decision. MTV all I ask is that when making your shows, if there is ever a moment that someone's life is at risk, do the right thing. Do what you would want someone to do to your loved one. Would you want someone you love being recorded driving under the influence? Or would you want someone to get them to safety? Treat those cast members, and the people they may be around or affecting as if they were your family. We are all humans first, and a human's safety should come first.
Sincerely,
A Viewer Affected by Addiction
