It was the opening night of the film "Everything Everything", based on the novel by Nicola Yoon, and my friend and I decided it would be a good excuse to get out of the house. Neither of us have read the highly acclaimed novel, but we are both dedicated readers and writers and wanted to see what the film was all about.
I would love to be writing a review of the film right now, instead of this, and from what I could tell the movie was pretty good. The problem is that I couldn't pay attention to it with a theater full of talking, snapchatting, clapping, and screaming children. I understand that premiere nights are a huge deal, I myself attended several Harry Potter and Twilight midnight premieres in my day, I will admit I even went to some of them sporting a Gryffindor scarf and cloak. With that said, I never in a million years would have talked through the entire film while snapping the whole thing on my phone.
The usual cheering, and "ooos" and "ahhs" during major scenes are normal, but applause, really? Please, from one movie goer to another, I know it's exciting and everything, but you need to be respectful to everyone else trying to watch the film around you. Maybe the experience was partly our fault for choosing to attend opening night, but in our own defense, at no premiere I've been to has the audience been that loud.
I'm not sure if people are just used to behaving however they want in the comfort of their own homes, and therefore are unsure of appropriate movie theater behavior, or if the kids in this theater were never taught the proper theater etiquette. I know technology is changing daily human behavior, but is it really changing it that much?
I myself have fallen guilty to snapchatting my day to day life, but never have I seen anyone Snapchat a film in public. If you really feel the need to snap your way through the film, if you really can't wait the two hours and Snapchat your friends back, please sit in the back. At least that way the rest of the audience won't be staring at the movie they paid for through your phone screen. Beside the fact that it's annoying, I'm pretty sure it's illegal. Speaking of annoying, WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT SNAPCHAT WITH THE FLASH IN A MOVIE THEATER. I do not want to be blinded by the constant flashing of your camera for the sake of a Snapchat.
I hope I was never this annoying at the movies, and if I was I sincerely apologize. To anyone who plans to see a movie or even a live show in the future, please consider the other people around you. Most audience members will have paid to enjoy a show or film in peace, that is something which should be respected, even if it is opening night.
