Dear Justin,
Speculation is unfair and one reason I am wary of the media. Unfounded claims are made about people, especially celebrities, which is no doubt frustrating for you. As such, upon hearing about the cancellation of your remaining tour dates, I was careful not to speculate too much about these “unforeseen circumstances,” but wondered at the gravity of the situation that would cause you to cancel so few shows on such short notice. But what you told fans is that you “just need rest.”
While I understand and sympathize with your situation, I cannot help but feel incredible disappointment. I bought my tickets in October 2016 when I missed your last stop in Minneapolis while abroad. For nine months, I have looked forward to your concert. I don’t want a full refund. I want to see you. And I may never get the chance to.
I can only imagine how overwhelming the Purpose World Tour must have been for you, but what makes me angry at times (as I make my way through the grieving process) is that you had just 14 shows left. A small handful compared to the 150 you’ve already put on. On top of shell-shocked fans, you’ve given up on all the dedicated crew members that have made the tour possible.
Despite my own reaction, I’m sure it was an emotionally taxing decision for you. Therefore, I support you in doing what’s best for your physical and mental well-being. You are the only one who is put through all the stress and responsibility of being on the road for so long and the only one who can judge what is within your best interests.
At the end of the day, you are human. This is something that I think other disappointed Beliebers need to recognize. The hard-work, the exhaustion, the never-ending media attention; the obsession over your every thought, decision, and move—you bear the brunt of it. You are never anonymous.
In the dialogue of your title track, “Purpose,” you say, “If you don’t give it all you’ve got, you’re only cheating yourself. Give it all you’ve got…Sometimes I’m weak but I’m going to do it.” You have put everything into this album, this tour, and the press surrounding it. You’ve been weakened because of it, but damn, you’ve pushed through.
While I will forever be saddened (and a bit salty) that I will never experience you and your music live at U.S. Bank Stadium, I hope that you enjoy your time to simply “ride some bikes.” Because you deserve structure, down time, and the chance to—for a while at least—be anonymous.
All my love,
a Belieber
