When I say I'm an only child, most people ask what it was like growing up and how it is now. I've never known anything else so I'm not really sure what to say, but there are definitely both positives and negatives of being an only child:
Pros:
1. Not Having To Share
Throughout my whole life, I've never had to share anything with a sibling. These days, it's still a luxury to not have someone steal my clothes or makeup, even though my mom and I sometimes share things.
2. Getting Things You Want
Since my parents don't have another child to buy Christmas and birthday presents for, they ask me what I want and I usually get it! Of course, I am always appreciative and thankful for everything they buy me.
3. Having All Your Parents' Attention
Sometimes it's annoying to be asked a lot of questions and constantly being the center of attention, but for the most part, it's comforting to know that your parents are only worried about you and are putting all their effort into taking care of you.
4. Learning To Be Independent
You're probably not going to want to spend every waking moment with your parents, so when your friends aren't around you have to learn to do things by yourself- such as going to the mall or going to appointments alone.
5. Not Being Compared To Anyone
Since there's no other kid in the house, you'll never be nagged about not getting as good grades as your sibling or things like that. Still, you should try your hardest to do good in school.
Cons:
1. Having No One To Play With
Although it was nice not having to share any toys, the downside to that was having to play with them all by myself. Even today, sometimes I wish I had a sibling that I could talk to and share experiences with.
2. People Calling You Ungrateful
Of course, being a little spoiled makes people jealous. There's a difference between your parents getting you everything you want at the snap of your fingers and them deciding to reward you with a gift because you got good grades. As I said before, I am extremely thankful for everything my parents buy me.
3. Always Being The Youngest
When your parents say there are no other kids going, you know you're in trouble. It's okay though, you always have your phone.
4. Never Having Blood Nieces and Nephews
This is probably the biggest negative of being an only child. Although you can definitely still be an aunt, you'll never have a blood niece or nephew, which is somewhat upsetting but not the worst thing that could happen to you in life.
5. Being Shy
Since you're not constantly surrounded by brothers or sisters your age, socializing can sometimes be tricky. It's okay to be shy, but just make sure you aren't afraid to live your life!
