One Year With Odyssey
Odyssey

It is insane that it has been a full year since I began writing for Odyssey. I remember sitting down at my computer a year ago and typing for several hours until my article about Hamilton was perfect. I remember the feeling of pride that swept over me when it was posted on Facebook for the world to read.

From that first article until today, I have written about fifty more articles for Odyssey. Although there were several weeks where I just made a list of songs or movies to fulfill my article for the week, most of the time I tried to think of topics that were relevant to my life. Writing is a great outlet for me, so I chose topics that meant something to me. Some of my favorite articles include: 10 Reasons Why Hamilton: An American Musical is so Successful, Thoughts About Rejection, Higher Learning v. Higher Education, Why I Love to Write, A Much Deserved Thank You for The Carroll News and What Teachers Don’t Understand. I try to choose topics that I actually enjoy writing about, whether it has to do with activities I am involved in or people who have affected my life. I am excited to continue into my second year writing for Odyssey and reflect on new topics to discuss in my writing.

In addition to writing, I am beginning a new chapter with the Odyssey team as a Contributing Editor. I am beyond excited to begin my journey editing and reading more of my teammates’ articles. This will be a great way to continue to improve my grammar and writing skills by observing other writers. I am so grateful for the past year with Odyssey and am looking forward to the upcoming year!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
