As you’ve already heard, Trump is under fire after firing FBI director James Comey. If you’re like me, then you’ve been browsing the web religiously reading up on every article that’s been written on the topic. The general consensus is that this scandal is mirroring the Watergate scandal, which took place during the Nixon administration. Some believe that this “Tuesday night massacre” will lead to Trump either resigning or being impeached. I don’t blame them. I’ve done my fair share of research into Watergate, and it seems to me that history is repeating itself. It is fair to say that this may be the scandal that finally kills Trump’s presidency. Unfortunately, I believe that this scandal will end up like the other scandals that have befallen Trump; forgotten.
Let me be frank, we anti-Trumpers don’t have the best memory. For every new white house debacle Trump causes, we say that it is the one; that this will be the one to end his presidency. We all remember Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood tape, where Trump had openly bragged about sexually assaulting women. What did we say then? That after this tape, Trump’s chances of winning the election- if any- were gone. What happened after? Trump had won the presidency, gaining 53% of white women’s vote in the process. Despite his intense, criminal misogyny Trump had won with the majority of white women’s votes.
When Trump had fired U.S attorney Sally Yates for refusing to defend Trump’s racist travel ban, we believed that this was going to hurt his presidency, perhaps, even illicit some sort of impeachment process. As it turned out, Yates was fired and Trump’s presidency was not attacked by the GOP. I can go further and mention the other scandals, like when Russian interference in our election was no longer a conspiracy, or when Trump had been caught with Russian officials and accepted money from Russian banks, or when Trump had Preet Bharara, asked to investigate any foreign payments Trump received through his businesses. All of these have failed to hurt his presidency.
I hate Trump as much as the next person and I really would like for him to be impeached, but I know that it will not happen. I know that, just like firing Yates and Bharara, Trump will not be impeached and that this will be water under the bridge a few weeks after.
