6 Reasons You Should Live In A Freshman High-Rise Your Freshman Year

Now that most acceptance letters have been received, and most final decisions have been made, it's time to move onto the next step: college housing! Colleges offer a wide variety of different layouts that students can choose from. Whether it's the classic double with community bathroom, or a luxurious apartment style, whatever you choose will be your new home for the next nine months. Having been a student for eight months and having heard other freshmen talk about their own living situation, I have come to the conclusion on the best place to live your freshmen year: the double with community bathroom freshmen high-rise.

1. The social atmosphere

There is no place more social on campus than a freshmen high rise. Everyone is new to campus, and most people want to meet as many new people as possible! If you study in the common area and keep your door open for the first month of school, you'll be amazed at how many new people you'll meet.

2. Learning to live with others

I know those one-bedroom apartments sound nice, (and they probably are), but living in a dorm with a roommate and having community bathrooms will teach you how to live with others-a skill everyone needs to have. Having to share a 130 square foot space with someone else teaches you how to compromise and to respect others and sharing bathrooms with forty other girls on your hall teaches you how to clean up after yourself.

3. You get to cut back on your trips to the store

Do you need AA batteries? Text the Groupme. Are you having a movie night and you forgot to get popcorn? Text the Groupme. Do you need an 80's themed prom dress for your tacky prom date night on Friday? Text the Groupme. In a building with 1000 students, someone is going to have it.

4. Your hallmates

I don't know how many times I've asked my hallmates for an opinion on an outfit. Your hallmates are also there to lend you their shoes, jewelry, clothes, and makeup. You have forty other wardrobes at the tip of your fingertips.

5. Your RA and GR

Your RA will be one of your best resources on campus! Your RA can help you with school problems, personal problems, or just be someone to vent to (these are just a few of the ways my RA has helped me; shout out to Fisayo)! Your Graduate Resident is also a great resource. You won't be as close with your GR, but they will still always be there to help you out (shout out to Ben for always fixing our electrical problems)! Make sure you take the time to get to know your RA and GR.

6. Rite of passageĀ

Most people who lived on campus their freshmen year lived in the dorms, so you might as well live in one too.

Don't let communal bathroom scare you out of a fun living experience. It's only one year, and it's also really not as bad as it sounds. You get used to it after a week. And having a roommate isn't even bad; you won't even be spending that much time in your room! So, grab your shower caddy and shower shoes, and consider living in a freshmen high rise!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
