Ole Miss is no stranger to political correctness.
In 2003 we got rid of Colonel Reb. The students at that time voted on Rebel the Bear as our official mascot. Since then, we have been in a very serious identity crisis. Are we the Ole Miss Rebel Black Bears Landsharks? We should not have changed our mascot to the Landsharks.
First of all, what even is a Landshark? It's not a real animal and it has absolutely no tie to Mississippi history. Of course, everyone understands that the landshark has been an Ole Miss symbol since 2008 when Tony Fein, after each big play, would place his hand into a shark fin on his forehead.
The “Fins Up” mantra followed shortly after and Ole Miss had a new tradition. But should it really be our mascot? Can you honestly say that it's going to bring about more school unity than the black bear?
At least the black bear had a correlation to our home state. You can read about Teddy Roosevelt's bear hunting experience here.
I don't think that you can even say "students voted to change the mascot to the landshark" when it was a yes or no, "Do you support the Landshark as the official mascot of Ole Miss?" question on the ballot.
In an opinion piece on the Daily Mississippian, Will Hall states, "With a voter participation rate at a stunningly low 20 percent, the campus’s establishment figures, united with their old friends in the radical liberal minority, hailed this selection as another step toward their dream of mandated unity."
There will always be a divide of wanting Colonel Reb as our mascot again. No matter what the students "vote" on, we will always be the Ole Miss Rebels.
