Old White People Have Failed Our Nation

Your Grandpa might be racist.

If you don't keep up with the news, let me drop some truth bombs for you. Only 39% of our country approves of our president. It has been a year.

One year later, we are still angry. Angry as ever actually, that somehow, against all odds, we elected racism, sexism, bigotry, and cruelty into the White House. Clinton swept the popular vote- by almost 3 million people. So, how the hell did Trump win?

White people. (Old white people, to be exact.)

I aim to be as conscious and educated as I can about social issues. I want a world where no one is judged by their race, religion, gender identity, or even their political beliefs. However, that is kind of hard when people's political beliefs are a personal attack on others based on their race. 57% of white voters choose a candidate that enables racism. Let that sink in. He is our president and he blatantly and unashamedly shows that he is not only morally unfit for the presidency, but that he has no regard for the ideals of the constitution. Here are his (in my opinion) most disgraceful 5 examples.

1. His wall

Despite the fact that the actual idea is idiotic beyond imaginable belief. People were actually chanting this at his rallies. I'm embarrassed for the people who fell for his lies.

2. His travel ban that targeted Muslims

When thousands and thousands of people are displaced from their country, you extend a helping hand, not the middle finger. Everyone is deserving of compassion regardless of race or religion.

3. He claimed that a judge was biased because "he's a Mexican"

Even his own party called him out for this textbook racist comment.

4. One of his companies has been sued twice for not renting properties to black people

To be accused of that not once, but twice? That is not a fluke.

5. He condoned the public beating of a black lives matter protester

In fact, he believes that the entire movement lacks political legitimacy.

I have no words.

You can't deny that racism still exists in the United States. We can work as hard as we want but we can't change everyone's minds. What truly scares me about racism in America is its prevalence. It is 2017 and we have white supremacists rallying everywhere. There is constant police brutality against black people. Muslims are being called terrorists because of their religion.

What we need to look deeper into are the underlying reasons as to how someone (who the majority of the country is against) made it to the white house.

What it boils down to is the electoral college. We elect a president through means that were born as an actual vestige of slavery. No wonder Trump won. The electoral college was enacted as a means to give southern slave states a disproportionately loud voice.

We sure as hell heard that voice in the last election.

While I am partially blaming this disaster on old white Americans (Statistics don't lie), we all have to take credit for this trash fire. Wake up and smell the racism, folks. As the young generation, it is our job to make sure that the minorities of the next generation have a voice, and a loud one. There's a reason that trumps voters are skewed to the older range of Americans.

Slavery and the Jim Crow laws were not that long ago. Our ancestors grew up with that influence. It was what they were taught and it is up to us to make sure no one is ever taught to think like that again.

Trumps America is not an America I want to live in. It is our responsibility to leave racism to the history books. It starts with our attitudes, it starts with education and awareness, and it starts at the polls. Voting gives us, as young Americans, a voice.

So you better use it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
