Penn State University

Old Main is one of the most beautiful buildings at Penn State and sits right in the middle of campus. Most students will walk by it on the way to class, and there is always something to be noticed, whether it is about the building, people surrounding it, or event going on on the lawn.

1. Wow, this is a perfect Instagram moment.

When walking by at different times of day, the sky always looks different behind Old Main, and it is literally a picture perfect moment. You can always catch a sunset Old Main photo on a Penn Stater's Instagram.

2. Are those sororities or just people taking pictures?

During the year, you can catch all kinds of campus groups taking their club photos on the steps of Old Main. And when everyone is dressed the same, you can never really tell what organization they belong to.

3. What are those people doing?

Many times when you walk by, there are groups of people hosting fundraisers or just hanging out. But a lot of the time, you can't figure out exactly what they are doing. From pie in the face fundraisers, to the yoga/acrobatic clubs, you're never really sure what is happening.

4. I wonder if there is free food there.

During the semester, different Penn State organizations, such as Lion Scouts, host events on Old Main lawn, so whenever you walk by and see a vendor, your college mind goes straight to finding the free food.

5. I swear that bell rings more than it is supposed to.

It's almost like every time you walk by you can hear it, and it's 5 past the hour.

6. Do people ever actually go inside?

Everyone knows that people work inside Old Main, but you never actually see anyone going in or out.

7. I wonder what would happen if I asked to join that game of frisbee.

When the weather is nice, it is contagious to want to be active on either the Hub lawn or Old Main lawn. Everyone is out, and you can't help but feeling like you need to be too.

8. I should come here and study.

Whether it is 50 degrees out or 90, the scenery is always so calm and beautiful that you can;t help but want to sit down on a blanket and study on the lawn.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
