I Can't Believe He Just Said That

How a Republican Congressman insulted the rest of the world

I can’t believe he just said that. That the United States Congressman could be so ignorant. During the GOP conventions this week Republicans could be found on every news station around the country expressing their views, but none of them match the pure ignorance to come out of Representative Steve King’s mouth. In an interview, he claimed that no other people have contributed to civilization as much as the people of western nations rooted in Europe. He claims that there is no proof in history that any other group of people has contributed more.

So let me give you a little history lesson. First let me just point out that if anyone has contributed the most to civilization it would be the people who created it, the Mesopotamians aka the ancient people of modern Iraq. Without them, we wouldn't have laws, agriculture, written language, currency, trade, governance, and so many other things we currently take for granted. They set up a civilization from nothing. How can someone who builds on the ideas of another ever be considered greater? What about Asia, the leader of technology in the modern world. Your Samsung, your toshiba, your PS4, all made and developed in a country on the Asian continent. China in particular has always played a major role in history. They created paper, gunpowder, and Fireworks. Several major world religions were also allowed to flourish there throughout the centuries. Under the Yuan Empire they were leading the world in science, and maritime activities. They advanced human knowledge decades into the future.

The kingdoms in Africa for centuries were regarded as the richest and most civilized nations in the world. Mansa Musa is still to this day labeled as the richest man to live, to have so much wealth it was impossible to write it down. His wealth fueled trading in Africa, making it have a bustling economy and trade networks that rivaled the silk road. Once Islam was created, the Arab world expanded and became the dominant empire of an era. Arabic was the global language at the time, and for centuries to follow. Under their rule education, art, and tolerance were practiced. Till this day the best poets are those of the ancient Arab world, the best architects, and the best scholars too. During this period the oldest university that is still operational today was also established in the Muslim town of Fez in Morocco. It was established over two hundred years before any university in Europe. The first university established in the world that is no longer open today was located in Takshashila , India and was established centuries beforehand in the year 700 BCE.

Representative King also said nations where Christianity had its foot print settled contributed most to civilization, but clarified it to only mean western civilization in the sentence following. News flash to you Congressman, Christianity is not even a western religion. Christianity is a Semitic religion created by a Palestinian Jew. Christianity was a gift given to western civilization by the Middle East. The thing that dominated every decision made, every charter drawn up, and every speech ever spoken by a leader is not even western. In America in particular, how can you believe that these so called "other people" had no contribution as great? This nation was built on the backs of all those not considered western, on the backs of the Native Americans, the Africans stolen from their homeland, the chines immigrants who built our first transcontinental railway, and the Hispanics coming here to find a better life after a CIA coup in their nation didn't go as planned. Everywhere you go in the world, every Middle Eastern, South American, African, and Asian country show respect to people who are different. They treat everyone as if they are the same, strangers like family. They understand that we have all worked together, hand in hand to get the world to where it is today. Western nations have made many great contributions to civilizations, but to claim that they are the only ones pulling their weight is to completely ignore the entirety of history prior to 1492.

Thinking any other way is disrespectful to your ancestors and to mine. It was this ideology that brought Rome to its knees, and it is this mentality that if not fixed might do the same to us. We are all stuck on this world together, let’s at least show everyone the respect they deserve.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
