Plastering your articles on all your social media usually informs people that you write for Odyssey. When I travel back home from school all I hear is, “Are you still writing those articles? I love seeing them on Facebook!” And let me assure you: I am definitely not complaining; it’s nice seeing your hard work and dedication recognized. However, with so many people being able to access and read your articles, you get A LOT of questions — and I know my fellow writers can relate. Enjoy learning about the 10 things Odyssey writers have answered countless times:

1. So, you get paid for that, right?

Believe it or not, no! Most of us do this because we like it, and it is an opportunity to get your work read.

2. Is that for a class?

Although I do write a lot for my classes, Odyssey is done completely during my free time!

3. Do you have to write about certain topics?

Absolutely not! I come up with my article ideas, and I get to express any of my personal opinions/beliefs. (It is simultaneously the best and worst aspect — yay for creative freedom, but nay to writer’s block.)

4. Where do you get your ideas?

Article ideas come from anywhere and everywhere. Conversations with others, past experiences, popular culture, political events — the possibilities never end!

5. You write something new every week?!

You betcha! The only way to improve is through practice and dedication, and it becomes part of your weekly routine.

6. Isn’t that stressful though?

Sometimes it can seem like you’re crunching last minute to write an article, but you have a time supporting and lifting you up through the process. Extensions can be made.

7. So, you guys just care about page views?

Writers obviously want their articles read, but it is definitely not the sole focus! Odyssey is about building community, growing as a writer, and having fun. Hits on an article are the last thing on my mind when I start typing. Quality over quantity ALWAYS.

8. Do you like doing this?

I do not believe in wasting energy and time on things that do not bring you joy, so yes! I do like doing this, although I know it is not for everyone.

9. How did you get started writing for Odyssey?

This answer varies for everyone, but most writers become a part of Odyssey through their school.

10. When does your next article come out?

There’s a new one every week, so SOON!

All jokes aside, I really do appreciate all the people that read, share, and enjoy my articles. As a writer, the most satisfying thing is seeing your words published and related to by others. Although sometimes the questions can seem repetitive, the interest and support is always welcome. Odyssey has provided a platform for so many unique voices, and I am so glad to be a part of this community.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
