As a journalism major, I'm always looking for ways to write and voice my opinion; that's why I was so excited when I started writing articles for the Odyssey. Now, the Odyssey isn't labeled as "journalism," nor does it claim to be this kind of platform so in turn it's very flexible. It allows thousands in our generation to freely present their views and exposes us to different lifestyles.
There is never pressure to write on specific topics, and no one ever tries to sway your opinion, or entirely change what you are saying in the editing process. You are basically free to write whatever you want as long as it is not super offensive or threatening. This was so important to me because it's not common for any type of writing platform to allow their content creators so much freedom when it comes to choosing a topic and running with it. Moreover, editors never try to change my opinion or basis of a controversial piece. They provide constructive criticism, and only change things that will hopefully benefit the writer in terms of views and shares.
Odyssey doesn't claim to be "news," so we aren't confined to writing about current events. We can be serious, funny, thought-provoking, persuasive, sarcastic, etc. We can change it up every week and not feel obligated to write on any specific topic. Having a platform where potentially thousands of people can view something I am passionate about is a great feeling. I'm gaining credible experience and it makes me even more excited for the future.
You don't have to be a writing major either to write at the Odyssey; if it's something you like to do then you can join the team. A platform for a larger audience to hear your thoughts and the freedom to express whatever you'd like; what more could we ask for?
PS: we can't be "fake news," when we aren't even news. ;)
