Why I Love Writing For The Odyssey

Why I Love Writing For The Odyssey
Julia Trout

It all started with me wanting to write an article about the best friends I was so grateful to meet through the nursing program at Temple University. After a bit of a waiting process, I got an email from Odyssey saying that they were highly interested in my article and that I would be published in the following days. A day or two after, I got an email from the Editor in Cheif of the Philadelphia region saying that my article was published and that they too wanted to offer me a possible creator position on their team. Immediately, I accepted and I could not be happier with my decision. Odyssey thus far has been such an incredible experience and I can’t wait to continue. Here are some of the reasons why I love being a Creator for Odyssey.

1. Great way to express your own creativity

I major in Public Health, which does not allow for a lot of creative writing. Odyssey has provided me with an avenue where I can do exactly that. Every week, I get the opportunity to write about literally anything I want! Everything from politics, to family, to relationships, you control what you write. At first, it was weird to have so much control over what I write. As a student, I was always used to someone telling me what to write about. As a creator for Odyssey, you can write about whatever is on your mind. It creates a great gateway for expressing your opinions, beliefs and stories

2. Looks awesome on a resume

Trying something new and gaining experience in new fields is always great, especially for a resume! As I do aim for experience in the public health field on my resume for future jobs and internships, providing experience for fields outside of the health field are awesome to have too. Even though it may have nothing to do with my major or future career, it shows that I am willing to step outside of my comfort zone and express my talents in others ways outside of health. Also, it shows strengths with typing, communicating with individuals and working with a deadline.

3. Allows you to be part of a community

Even though the work I do for Odyssey is a computer, everyone involved with The Odyssey is considered part of a team and a community. I am one of numerous individuals that write for Odyssey within the Philadelphia area. Every week, I am constantly communicating with my head editor and all of the other members of my team on our ideas for what to write about, when deadlines are due and daily comments and words of encouragement to get us through the day or week. Regardless of the fact that I have never met any of the individuals face to face, I already feel like I truly know them. They are all such a creative and open minded group of people that I am so glad to call “family”!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
