As a big fan of the Ocean's trilogy, I was excited to find out that a reboot, this time with an all-female cast was going to be released this summer. And with such a strong line up of stars in the ensemble, I knew, like the trilogy before it, that this would be a strong film for the heist sub-genre.
Sandra Bullock stars as the title character Debbie Ocean, sister of the previous franchise's head con man, on a mission of revenge disguised as a seemingly impossible heist. Having spent 5 years in prison after being set up by her ex-boyfriend after a con-gone-wrong, to say that Debbie has had time to think of the perfect heist is an understatement, as proven when the crime takes place during the climax of the film.
Every hitch the team comes across is fixed by Debbie's already orchestrated plan, or by her quick thinking, making her a great main character to follow throughout the film.
Although every character involved in the heist has their own set of skills just like the previous trilogy, their character development is not just shown in montages. Throughout the film, we get to see the 7 (and after the heist is complete 8) women bond with each other throughout the plot. This is helped by some characters already being familiar with Debbie such as her sidekick Lou, (Cate Blanchett) con woman turned housewife Tammy, (Sarah Paulson) and a jeweler Amita (Mindy Kaling.
With half the team already knowing the head of the operation, a lot of the clunky dialogue present in the previous films (especially Ocean's 12 in my opinion) is missing, making the quick interactions we do get that much more enjoyable. But like other heist films or films with an ensemble cast in general, every character brings with them a unique charm that makes us root for the criminals throughout the film.
Nine Ball's 'too cool for school' persona, Rose's nervousness before and after the heist, Constance's laid back personality, even when the plan looks like it might not work makes every audience member relate to at least one character a little more. Even Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) who joins the team for only the last portion of the film delights the audience by her seeming unawareness until it's revealed that Debbie has also looped her into the operation.
That being said, the film is much more 'fun' than 'good.' But for the heist genre, it works. I was much more willing to ignore major plot holes because I was too busy having fun watching the heist unfold.
Hopefully, this film's success will spawn it a trilogy of its own as I know I would love to see these eight awesome ladies heist again!
