Health insurance premiums are on the rise. Some premiums are seeing up to an 116 percent increase in 2017. Some of this is due to the trend of the rising cost of healthcare. But even though the cost of health care goes up every year, the increase in spending in the American healthcare system is actually increasing at a lower rate than originally projected.
So why are we seeing exorbitant increases in insurance premiums? The answer doesn't lie within Obamacare itself, but rather an uncertainty from the insurers themselves.
Trump is causing uncertainty, which is leading insurers to panic.
You've probably seen all over the internet these big headline stories about Obamacare premium increases. Conservative activists, such as Charlie Kirk, have jumped on these stories as an opportunity to bash Obamacare and push for its repeal.
But there's plenty of blame to go around.
Brad Wilson, the chief executive of Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina, believes that he had to raise the premiums by 22.9 percent because of a purposeful attempt by the Trump administration to sabotage Obamacare.
This is because Wilson is faced with uncertainty regarding whether or not President Trump will carry through with the cost sharing reduction subsidies provided to low-income Americans under Obamacare. This uncertainty forces increases at an alarming rate, increases because the subsidies are eligible to people making up to 400 percent of the poverty line. With the subsidies aiding that many people, insurance companies, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina are threatened by a massive drop off in profits, leaving them with no other option other than to greatly increase premiums for their customers. Wilson believes that if he knew for certain that President Trump would allow the Obamacare subsidies to remain, he would only have had to increase premiums by only 8.8 percent.
Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina is one of many health insurance providers across the United States. And if the Trump administration decides to not pay the cost sharing reduction subsidies provided under Obamacare, the premium increases across the country could be devastating.
