It's been over a year since the Obamas left Washington and I know I'm not the only one wondering what they've been up to. Aside from some public speaking engagements, the Obamas haven't been seen in the public eye. A few days ago, it was announced that Barack Obama and Netflix have come to an agreement for 44 to produce a number of shows for the streaming giant. The move comes as President Obama has been seeing new ways to stay involved with the world and continue to spread his message. He and Mrs. Obama will be paid for their exclusive content, content in which Netflix has been trying to incorporate into their streaming service.
Personally, I like the idea of Barack Obama producing original content and touching on today's issues from a position of an everyday civilian and a former president. We are currently under an administration which has something of a personal agenda against the legacy of President Obama. Being able to still interact with the people and supporters and find ways to help them is very admirable.
Regardless of what side of politics you side with, you have to commend President Obama for his legacy outside the political ring. He is a good man, a good father, and husband. As a man, he is a role model for millions around the world.
Barack is doing something special with the Netflix deal.
What shouldn't be lost on us is the precedent that this is potentially set for future presidents. I'm not saying all presidents will produce original content post-presidency, but I believe that the advancement of technology can allow them to still be involved in the civil world and its happenings.
When I think about the most recent former presidents, you don't really hear much about them after they're done serving as president. Bill Clinton is probably the most recognizable, and I understand that they are up in age, but it would be nice to interact with world leaders. I want to hear from them when the next guy is making decisions completely opposite from my own.
Interestingly enough, who knows what the influence of this power move could mean for future generations. Will our leaders begin seeking out new ways to broadcast their ideas from platforms separate from political office? Who's to say? We can consider this a stepping stone if we are to see anything similar in the near future.
Netflix seems to have good timing with its decision to partner up with the Obamas. It comes at a time where the company could use some positivity. They've recently been under fire for offering actress and comedian Mo'Nique a low offer for her specials. On the flip side, they offered fellow comedian Amy Schumer almost 10 times that amount, sparking controversy, and shedding the light on unequal pay.
From being accused of low-balling a comedic legend to partnering up with the 44th president, it's a slick 360 by Netflix and we should keep an eye on their upcoming transactions. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing more original content from them, as well as hear more from President Obama.
During his presidency, I felt as though he was limited in what he could say and express. Now that he has complete control of the work being produced, I predict that we'll see the Obama that became president, we'll get to know the man, not the position.
