Before I begin, I have some people to apologize to.
To my roommate, I'm sorry I told you I cannot accept Christmas decorations in our house until after Thanksgiving.
To my friend at Cincinnati, I'm sorry for yelling at you every year when you start singing Christmas carols in October.
To anyone else, I'm sorry for my distaste for all things Christmas before Thanksgiving.
Now I'm done with apologies.
Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas and I think the Thanksgiving-December holiday-New Years combination is the best way to end the year. But I'm a huge fan of so many other holidays. I think St. Patrick's Day is the best, not just because it's my birthday, but because it's one of those holidays where everyone is happy and carefree.
How can you be stressed when the main way to celebrate is by wearing green and hanging out at a bar? Then comes Thanksgiving. It's literally a day to spend time with my family, which college has made me cherish a lot more. Next on the list is Halloween, spooky season, whatever you want to call it. It's just plain fun.
I understand some people start counting down to Christmas halfway through the year but I've never gotten why. It feels so blown out of proportion with all the advertising, songs, movies, and TV specials. To me the best part is decorating and watching my three dogs try to open the bag of tennis balls we buy them every year. I enjoy spending time with my family but the day itself has never been that special to me, especially compared to my feelings about other holidays.
While I pine for next year's Turkey Day, I will concede to all you Christmas-lovers. Sing your carols, start watching "Home Alone," make some cookies for Santa, and throw up those string lights.
