When you were younger your mother always told you not to play with your food. Am I right? Well now that you're an adult, you can do as you wish, which includes drawing faces on your eggs or making a volcano with your mashed potatoes and gravy.
Some people are taking it to another level, and making masterpieces out of their food. What they do is pure art, and there is no other way to describe it. Imagine writing on your resume that your skills include carving fruit, or playing instruments made from vegetables.
The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra does just that. This group purchases all of their vegetables from a market and then fashions them into instruments that they later use in their concerts. Pumpkins become drums, carrots become whistles, and zucchinis become recorders.
At the end of each concert, the leftover veggies are turned into a vegetable soup and served to the audience so the entire process can begin all over again. Their instruments are never the same for each show, leaving everything up to the creativity of the orchestra members. They literally make a living playing with their food.
If vegetables don't suit your fancy, you can play with fruits instead! The internet is filled with pictures and tutorials on how to carve various objects out of fruit. You can spend your time making elaborate bouquets, strange faces, and exotic animals from every part of a fruit, including the rind and the peel. It may look complicated, but practice makes perfect!
Unfortunately, there is currently no fruit orchestra out there. Maybe if you practice your skills you could be the founder of the first one! So, next time your mom tells you to stop playing with your food, tell her you're simply making art.
