A Note On Finding Your Passion And Interests

How do I find my life's passion?

I participated in Campus Moviefest, which is an event held at many different universities that gives students the equipment needed to produce a movie. When I first saw the poster, I was intrigued to say the least. It came at the perfect time. I was in the midst of exploring and searching for my passions and interests. I always knew that I loved movies and they were the one thing I would drop everything to do or watch. Everything about movies fascinates me. I love telling stories and listening to stories. There is nothing like a good movie telling a brilliant, gripping story. Movies are the one thing that make me feel emotions.

Why did I tell you all of that? Because everyone has interests. Things they would think about and do without a school or without someone forcing you to study. When I ask people what they would do if they could do anything they wanted some people just say with a laugh: "I don't have any interests or passions."

But there's a difference between a robot and a human. Every single human being has interests and passions. Let that sink in: "every single human being has interests and passions."

But why do people say that? Why do people think they have no passions? It's because of the school system. Our school system transforms students into cogs in a machine. School forces us into these subjects to test us as a way to force us to explore our interests and develop our knowledge. But instead, school has evolved to force us to hide away what makes us interested and happy so that we can replace what makes us happy with getting As.

Passions don't just crop up. You explore and test out what makes you passionate. But if all your time is spent studying in a dimly lit library instead of exploring hobbies, how will you ever find your passion and your dream?

If everything in your life pointed to the fact that you were meant to be a race car driver confined to nothing but speed, but instead you chose to be an accountant confined into a gray cubicle, then how will you ever reach your true potential if you aren't doing what you were built to do?

But what if you love something you can't pursue as a career because it doesn't make a profit? I understand that. So ask yourself a question: "if I died never having chased my dream and chose to be financially stable instead-- will I be okay with that?" The more you practice it the better you get. The better you get the more of a chance you have at making your dream successful.

It's not going to be easy. It will be very, very hard. So one last question: "is your dream worth it?"

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
