Voting is a formal expression made by an individual or multiple people that is anonymously submitted on a ballot. Historically, Americans have suffered from not having the right to vote due to being a slave, being a woman, or suffering from the effects of Jim Crow laws. Many Americans fought so hard to be able to have the opportunity to vote so they could have a say in their own country, and how the laws in place and politics affect their daily lives.
1. Don't take the right to vote for granted.
Be thankful, be gracious and be relieved that you can make a difference. Other countries don't even allow this at all. American history has worked so hard to give others the right to vote, not voting is not acknowledging what these heroes did for you.
2. Every vote counts.
In the Presidential race of 2000, Al Gore vs. George W. Bush, the race was won by Bush with a margin of 537 votes from Florida. The fact that a past president was able to win an election by just 537 votes proves that everyone's vote does count.
3. The effects of voting are more profound than you think.
The price of gas to fill up your car, the right to have or not have an abortion, how high or low your income taxes are, student debt, minimum wage, civil rights, being able or not able to get your daily birth control pills from Planned Parenthood, the sales tax on items, being able to exit and enter the country. The list never ends.
4. By not voting, you're basically giving up your rights.
Voting is the one opportunity that the American people have to express their opinions on politics. It is one of the only things they can do to keep or remove someone from office. If you don't vote during an election and the new person in office takes a right away from you that matters to you, can't do anything about it. If you voted you can know that you at least fought for what is important to you.
5. Stand up for the people who don't have voices.
Stand up for your family members and friends that are under 18. Stand up for the ones who are affected by American laws and politics that have no say. The American children are counting on us to be there for them.
