Your mother wouldn’t approve of how my mother raised me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve questioned everything and never thought twice about how I looked (except the eighth grade – rough times). She taught me so much, most of which society refuses to.
She taught me to think for myself.
She taught me to cuss when I’m angry and to cry when I’m sad.
She taught me to not care what anyone thinks.
She raised me to be independent and not feel like I need a man.
She told me that not everybody is going to like me, so I might as well just try to make my own self happy.
She taught me to accept everyone regardless. Everyone is human and deserves love.
She taught me that as a woman, I deserve every opportunity that a man has.
She taught me that an education is the best thing that I can buy.
She taught me that an intelligent woman can get a lot farther than a beautiful one, but if you're both you can rule the world.
She taught me that I don't need anyone's approval but my own.
My mom never preached outside beauty, hate, or “womanly duties.” I grew up believing I was worth something, but society creates stigmas for women. Becoming something on my own is the first step in overcoming them.
Your mother probably wouldn’t approve of mine, but I do.
