Books can be boring, and if you're like me, you're probably getting sick of imaginary creatures and teen romances that will likely end in disaster.
But I'd like to encourage you not to lose hope or your passion for prose. Here are a few nonfiction, and thus, non-annoying books that you won't regret reading.
1. "Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey White House Years" by David Litt
Written by a former speechwriter for President Obama, this book is filled with quirky stories about what life is like for a 20-something year old trying to navigate life in Washington. It's funny, eye-opening and entertaining--completely worth the purchase on Amazon.
2. "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity" by Katherine Boo
This book takes place in Annawadi, a slum of Mumbai, and documents the lives of some of the residents. If I had to describe this book in one word, I would have to say it's important. Katherine Boo is an award-winning investigative journalist, and her work often focuses on poverty and injustice. Every page is a reminder that we are not entitled to anything.
3. "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City" by Matthew Desmond
Another book about poverty, this time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Evicted tells its story through the viewpoints of both tenants and landlords, showcasing the struggles that they both face. Matthew Desmond is a social sciences professor at Harvard and spent years gathering data and studying the economic exploitation that these families endure. This book puts American poverty into perspective.
4. "How to Ruin Everything: Essays" by George Watsky
If you're looking for something lighter, pick up this essay collection. George Watsky is a slam poet-turned rapper whose prose writing is still unmistakably poetic. From true stories that range from international ivory smuggling to his struggles with epilepsy, the contents of this book will leave you laughing, crying, inspired, and whatever other emotions you can think of all at once.
