Non-Greeks are unique in our own right

We Are People Too: Why I'm Better Off Living As A Non-Greek

Being in Idaho has reminded me life is an essential gift. However, being in Idaho has also reminded me that being non-Greek isn’t the norm and aren't unique. Is that a problem? For me, absolutely not because I won't allow myself to be in an extremely uncomfortable group on a regular basis just to fit in and lack authenticity. I’m happy to be a non-Greek. Don’t give me wrong, I have several friends who are Greek and consider them good friends. But their lifestyle is just not for me.

Being non-Greek shouldn’t be a frowned upon. As a matter of fact, there are unique individuals who aren’t Greek because for some, they wouldn’t have to deal with the drama and politics on trying to get along with everyone. I can't imagine being in a house meeting where you'll be judged for the littlest things, you wouldn’t want to deal with this drama right?

I hate conflicts, most people do and I can’t imagine myself being Greek for a week. Just because non-Greeks doesn't want to be involved with group drama, doesn’t mean we escape it easily. Drama is inescapable no matter what group we affiliate ourselves in college. But the benefit of being non-Greek is avoiding the stupidest dramas such as people wanting to know “who you like” and “who you’re having an affair with.”

Yes, there are people who deal with drama outside of the Greek system, but one of the differences are the number of people who may know about what you're going through. Those who are uncomfortable with drama would rather allow a certain amount of people to know about an unfortunate event like family crisis instead of dozens of people who may spread the word behind your back. You be the judge on who you want to deal with? Quantity matters.

Non-Greeks also have personalities that I haven’t seen from Greeks in Idaho. I’ve met some ordinary and hardworking individuals that can still make a difference. For example, there are guys who work their rear ends off to keep a student-run radio station going and most of them aren’t Greek. I find those people unique because they aren’t being held down by the politics or egotistical individuals. The only way people can hold themselves down are themselves and other uncontrollable things like work and school.

I'm aware that Greeks get to do some fancy things like cruises, party into the night, and do fantastic philanthropy. But does it mean non-Greeks don’t have a life? I disagree of non-Greeks lacks a good life. Our options our endless and we care about a lot of things like having a good time or making a difference.

Overall, non-Greeks have a life and a purpose to study in Idaho. Just because we don’t have a brother or sisterhood connection doesn’t mean we’re a minority group of students. We’re a different kind of people, we’re uniquely independent and still passionate to succeed in our lives and I like it that way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
