As someone who has grown up going to a Southern Baptist Church, I have picked up on some phrases over the years that sound completely insane to people who did not grow up in church or in my case, the Bible Belt. So if you know these phrases, then just sit back and enjoy! If you don’t know what they mean, then here is your chance to finally figure out what your Christian friends are actually saying.
1. Washed In The Blood
OK, this one seems like it comes straight out of a horror film, and if I wasn’t raised a Christian, then I would have this image of an evil mastermind who defeated his enemies and then bathed in the blood of his enemies. Thankfully, this is not the case! When we say washed in the blood, we really mean the sacrifice of Jesus washed away our sins, and if we believe in Him, then we are accredited righteousness and our sins are forgiven.
2. Hedge Of Protection
This one is actually very puzzling even for some Christians. Like how is a hedge supposed to protect anyone? I know this phrase comes from the book of Job. It is simply a phrase used usually in prayer to ask God to protect us from evil.
3. Have Much Fruit
This one also comes from the Bible, in Galatians 5, Paul talks about the fruits of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When a person receives salvation they live their life according to the Holy Spirit, they have these “fruits” or attributes that define them.
4. Do Life Together
I’m looking at you, young Christian girls. Basically this is a phrase that many young Christian girls will say it means that we go through life together, good times and struggles, and that we will remain friends and help each other out when necessary. It’s the idea that God designed us for community and therefore we will go through every phase of life together.
5. My Walk With God
We don’t physically walk with God obviously, this phrase really just means having a relationship with Jesus. It’s kind of the same concept of doing life together only this time it involves obedience and discipline to God and growing to be a godlier person.
6. God Will Open A Door
While we can’t apply this statement to every situation, what this means is that sometimes God will allow opportunities to present themselves so that we can share the gospel.
7. Sharing The Gospel
Which leads me to my next phrase: sharing the gospel. The Gospel is basically the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus. When a Christian wants to share the Gospel it means they want to tell the story of Jesus in hopes that the person they tell the story to will receive salvation.
Many of these phrases do come from the Bible and some of them are phrases that have come from modern-day Christianity. Regardless, hopefully now you understand what these mysterious phrases that your Christians are saying and what they mean.
