By now you have probably heard who Roy Moore is. In case you haven't, Moore is running for Jeff Sessions Alabama Senate seat. He is backed by Steve Bannon. He whipped out an actual handgun on stage at a rally. He is most recently consumed by sexual harassment allegations. Five women have come forward saying that Moore sexually assaulted them when they were between the ages of 14-16 in the late '70s. Moore would have been in his 30s during this time.
Republicans have spent the week taking back their endorsements of Roy Moore, because of his weak denial of the claims. Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, actually came out and said he believes the women and that Moore should drop out of the Senate race. But when you look at the polls, Moore is still ahead by at least 6 points in some. So why do Alabamians still want to vote for this guy? It's actually much simpler than you think. A lot of them would rather vote for this alleged pedophile than vote for a Democrat. The Democrat in the Alabama race, Doug Jones, has an exceptional record. He was a U.S. Attorney in the state of Alabama and was actually able to get justice for the 4 little African-American girls who were killed when Klansmen bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in September of 1963. These are two very different men. One with integrity and one without.
Rory Moore is just the latest to come under fire for sexual misconduct allegations. It seems like every day there is another story out that shows you once again just how hard it is to be a woman. Not only are we getting stories of incidents that have happened 30 or 40 years ago, but stories of allegations from 5 or 10 years ago. There has to be something we can do as a society to stop this from happening. First, we need to not blame the victims or accuse them of lying. These 5 women who have come out against Moore have witnesses. The Washington Post, which broke the story with the first 4 accusers, cited more than 30 sources. Even then Republican leaders were saying "If the allegations are true," then Moore should drop out. Why is it okay to give these men the benefit of the doubt? But when it comes to the women, who were brave enough to come out and tell their stories, well there has to be something wrong with her. Secondly, we need to stop putting these kinds of people in a place of power. If you see something, say something. In the case of Harvey Weinstein, almost everyone in Hollywood had heard the rumors of what was going on. So, how come no one said anything? Why did the Weinstein Company try to cover it up? Trump was accused by over 15 women of sexual harassment, he bragged about grabbing women inappropriately, and look where he is today. Thirdly, men need to come out and support women. Not because you may have a daughter, a mom, an aunt, a grandmother or whatever, but because we are all human beings.
So please, if you are reading this and you are from Alabama, vote for Doug Jones. Not because he is a democrat, but because he is the better person and the better candidate. Resist.
