Anyone who's converted oxygen into carbon dioxide has seen a romantic comedy. As predictable as they are sappy, one thing is always certain: the couple ends up together and happy, kissing while some quintessential song plays them into the credits. No matter the obstacles, from long distance to crazy family influences to literally time itself, somehow love manages to transcend everything in right around two hours.
Throughout my almost 22 years of existence, I've eaten up these storylines, laughing at the corny jokes and sighing at the romantically awkward hardships. I've honestly never seen a rom com I didn't like.
Now, I know what you're all dying to ask: Did these romantic comedies give me a jaded, unrealistic expectation of dating, relationships, and, most importantly, love? Yes, yes they did, and I'll admit that fair and square. I haven't actually seen anyone hold a boombox above their head to prove themselves nor has a spontaneous flash mob erupted in my presence.
I still believe it could happen, though.
I know that love is more than two hours of cute kissing scenes broken up by one mild argument that eventually gets completely resolved all set to a kick-ass soundtrack. I try not to be naive, and the disappointing lack of a musical background in my day-to-day routine reminds me that life isn't a movie.
However, the everlasting optimist I am, I still have hope that rom com love is alive in this world. All I have to do is look at my parents, who've been married for almost 25 years and still flirt like teenagers (disgustingly enough). Or my best friend, who's marrying her high school sweetheart next June. Or myself whenever there's chocolate cake in the room.
Newsflash: Love is real, everyone. And I refuse to think any different.
I refuse to give up the feeling I have deep in my soul when I see the look people truly in love give each other. The same feeling I have when I listen to a Bleachers song or see a super cheesy proposal video on Facebook.
I refuse to believe that love can't conquer all. If I can't believe in love, what the heck am I supposed to believe in?
So, feel free to think what you want, world. I'll be right here, being love's biggest fan, boombox and all.
