The new action-packed thriller No Escape, came out last weekend amid an entourage of high hopes that the film would take off at the box office. However, not only did it only pull in $8.2 million, compared to the $13.1 million that Straight Outta Compton brought in, but it also fell short when it came to the quality of the film itself, or at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. My first thought when I saw the trailer for No Escape, was how interesting and informational a movie about genocide and survival sounded, followed closely by “I wonder if Owen Wilson is any good in serious movies?”
The movie did end up showing a very interesting take on genocide and the inner workings of a country that was rebelling due to the injustices brought on them by foreign corporations. In a realistic way it showed the violence of rebellion brought on to protect the country's citizens along with sympathizing with employees of the corporations as they try to survive. No Escape has you on the edge of your seat as violence and gore constantly rip through the plotline right from the beginning. However, the suspense accompanying said violence is intertwined within a plotline that incorporates the love and strength of a family, which holds the whole film together.
Even though Owen Wilson acts better in comedic roles, he very convincingly played a protective father trying to save his entire family from the hands of the rioters. The entire cast played their parts with ease, and the relationships built between the characters were convincing and in the end put me on the edge of my seat as the possibility of death and the splitting of a family played out on screen.
While the movie itself did not do well at the box office, the character development and the terror brought on by the realism of the film in my opinion makes it a high-quality film that should be rated higher on Rotten Tomatoes than it was.
