A gentleman on the town sports sophistication. Suave looks, charismatic talk, and subtle nods to the free are all aptitudes of a gentleman out in the night life. No matter where you go, what you wear, and who you go with, you will need to perfectly embody the thought of sophistication.
Now, sophistication does not equate money, nor does it equate happiness stemming from egoist ideals. Sophistication is the humble necessity of the gentleman. A leather jacket can bring about a level of sophistication as a blazer (or a suit jacket, mind you) if worn and used correctly. A v-neck t-shirt can bring about as much sophistication as a shirt and tie if worn and used correctly. So on and so forth, anyone can become a sophisticated gentleman if they understand how to use the assets they have in their hands correctly.
This list is for you, the modest gentleman, to help you get ready for the nightlife. This list will help you become a Gentleman of All Trades.
Attitude
"Can I HELP you?!"
Attitude is an important tool in a true gentleman's toolkit. Being able to confidently move around the room without being egoist is absolutely essential with speaking to other individuals. Being polite, humble, and intelligent, a gentleman allows himself to speak freely within the room without bashing others and their opinions. A gentleman also catches himself before he becomes enamored and asks others to speak their mind, allowing the flow of thought between each individual.
In essence, a gentleman uses his attitude to allow himself and others to speak intelligently while keeping himself pursed when necessary. Being humble and polite allows the negation of intimidation, preventing others from actively watching their tones.
A Pen and Paper
"Let me take that down"
Everyone has a cellular device. Everyone takes down information on their electronic device. It is a commonplace, and let's face it, it's downright boring. In addition, it is somewhat unprofessional. What if you are networking?
A proper gentleman carries a pen and paper. It does not have to be anything fancy, nor anything bulky. Personally, I walk around with a small notepad I picked up from the local stationary store for less than $3 that can adequately fit in my right breast pocket of my leather jacket. I also carry a fountain pen that I received for less than $15 on Amazon. Sophistication does not have to be expensive!
Taking out a pen and paper to write down contact details or a memo makes you, the gentleman, seem less pretentious. Many people do not want to be the guy that takes out their phone in the middle of a conversation, no matter what reason. It is still somewhat unprofessional, and sometimes even rude.
A Watch
"I have the time..."
A watch is essential for the modern gentleman. None of this about digital watches or smart watches (albeit, there are some exceptions), as old fashioned analog watches are the best way to present the elegance of a gentleman. Note how I said, "elegance", as this is a tedious item where our definition of sophistication can and cannot apply simultaneously.
An analog watch allows the gentleman to check the time without taking out their phone. It saves time, and it also saves humbleness. In this age, phones oftentimes create heartless debate on whether or not x's brand is better than y's. And due to the recent launch of certain devices, smart phones present a status symbol. Flip phones also add to that effect, as individuals stereotype flip phones with the malevolent and the like. Having a nice watch is the perfect way to show that you are a gentleman.
A watch does not have to be expensive, albeit many individuals can pick out a cheap watch in a crowd of thousands. Make sure it is a nice, functional, analog watch with a leather and metal look. Like I said, it does not have to be expensive. It is not here to make you seem wealthy! It is here to save time and to prevent the phone from coming out.
Now, certain smart watches can help with this essential. Personally, I believe that Apple watches do not contribute to humble sophistication. They are rectangular and horribly expensive.
A Lighter
"You need me to light that candle? Why? I love cinnamon flavor!"
Having a lighter makes a huge statement. Not only does it show that you may have experience in the finer items in life (i.e. cigars), it shows personality. You do not need to smoke in order to carry a lighter. This, however, cannot be a Bic lighter. Bic lighters are not flexible in a way that allows a gentleman's look. Getting a cheap Zippo that is less than $10 is easy, and it lasts.
Besides smoking and such (which I personally do not want to push), lighting candles in style makes any event look instantly more appealing.
A Pair of Gloves
"I can't go outside without these!"
Depending on the temperature, a pair of dress gloves is a necessary addition to your outing at night. It shows modern sophistication, albeit not humble sophistication. Having gloves shows that you prepare yourself. It also shows that you have more to yourself than just your attire (as denoted by taking off your gloves).
A Handkerchief
"No I don't blow my nose into this"
A handkerchief has numerous uses for not only a gentleman, but for anyone. It can be used to clean a pair of glasses, wipe a stain from a jacket, or other items. Having a handkerchief shows practicality. That is literally about it.
Anyone can be a gentleman. Anyone can be sophisticated. Sophistication does not require an exuberant amount of money. Sophistication can be humble if you act as a true gentleman.
Remember, everyone:
A Gentleman of All Trades is Suave, has Subtlety, and has Charisma. Most importantly, a Gentleman of All Trades is humble.
