You hear it all the time, nice guys finish last, but these days, it's the nice girls who finish last.
We live in a world that accepts and applauds the girls who spend their weekends throwing themselves at any and every guy in their sight, giggling at every word they say, only to forget their name the next day and never speak to them again.
We live in a world where the girls who aren't running around flaunting everything they have are prudes, they're boring, they don't know how to have fun.
We live in a world where it's perfectly okay to sleep with someone once and then never speak to them again.
Even worse, we live in a world where it's perfectly okay to sleep with someone we know and then act like it never happen and then act like that's normal or something.
We live in a world where we're taught self-respect and dignity aren't attractive.
And the nice girls finish last.
And quite frankly, it absolutely sucks.
We're not the girls who are getting hundreds of likes on their Instagram selfies.
We're the ones who don't need to post pictures everywhere of our duck lips and boobs hanging out to get someone's attention, yet we're not the ones who get brought up as "hot girls" when the guys are all sitting around with their friends.
We're the ones who get told by our parents' friends that we're just so beautiful and we smile and say thank you but we never really believe it because we tell ourselves "if I was really that beautiful he would like me ".
We're the ones who groan and sigh when we realize that that stupid girl is playing games with you again, hurting you again and we groan and sigh even more when we see you running back to her again.
We're the ones who realize that you're a good guy and would give anything for you to see us to see us as something more than a friend, except for our dignity and character.
We're the ones who don't have a lot of girlfriends and don't hang out with girls often because we don't want to be associated with the ones who act the complete opposite of us because we don't want the guys to think we're like them.
We're the ones who are friends with the guys that everyone wants to date, so it hurts us even more when we realize that that guy friend we've found ourselves smitten with will never see us as anything more than a friend.
I know, I know, I've heard from my mom a million times before, "someday you'll find someone and it will all be worth it".
That's great to think about, it's a great outlook to have, but it does nothing right now and right now, we're the ones who are finishing last because society doesn't like nice girls. Our culture tells us we're not normal, we're weird, we're boring, we're prudes because we don't go out on Saturday nights and get so drunk that we wake up with someone we barely know and don't remember how we got there.
But heaven forbid we say anything about how other girls act.
Heaven forbid we get mad and defensive and say something when our guy friend ends up fooling around with some slut.
Heaven forbid we act bewildered when someone says "Yeah I could've gotten with him if I wanted to" and be proud of it like it's no big deal to just sleep with someone and not think about it twice.
We're the ones who are constantly getting made fun of because it's okay to give someone a hard time for not going out, getting blackout drunk and sleeping with a random person every weekend but not okay to do the same for someone who did.
We're the ones who get to hear about it. We're the ones who sit and listen to our friends tell us about the wild weekend they had and who they "got with" that weekend and pretend to act like we don't see anything wrong with it.
We're the ones who sit back and think "I told you so" when we watch the guys we know get hurt because they got involved with one of those girls.
I don't know about other nice girls, but I'm getting pretty sick and tired of being the one who finishes last.
Because it's not enough to just be the girl that he stares at all the time, the girl that he casually flirts with every now and again, the girl who's Instagram posts he likes every now and again because at the end of the day none of it matters when we're all alone wondering what the heck we're doing wrong.
But we're not doing anything wrong.
It's not me it's you.
Because in five years, when we're all out of college, we're going to be the ones getting chased after because we'd rather have a real, adult relationship than just go out and hook up with random people for the heck of it.
We're the ones who are too old to play games and be petty and unlike all of your pictures and unfollow you on Instagram because we got mad at you.
We're the ones who will love with our whole hearts and never hurt someone because we know what it's like to get hurt.
I don't know about you, but I'm okay with that because I'd rather be the girl someone wants to marry than the girl that someone wants to sleep with on a Saturday night.
So maybe we won't finish last in the long run, that's what I keep telling myself anyway. We just might find someone that's worthy of all that love we've been waiting to share. And someday, we won't be the ones finishing last.
