Seven days. That is the average number of days in which a National Football League (NFL) player is arrested. The NFL is increasingly gaining media attention surrounding various topics, but mainly the players protesting the National Anthem. We've all seen and heard the players conduct on the field, but what about off the field?
Their off-the-field conduct nearly reflects their on-field conduct, terrible. USA Today's Sports section had a nice feature about NFL player arrests. The trend of arrests per year was in a decline (2014 - 51; 2015 - 40; 2016 - 26), until this year, of course.
As of September 22, there have been 32 arrests in 2017. Some notable arrests this year include:
- David Parry, Indianapolis Colts – Suspected of stealing a golf cart, DWI, resisting arrest.
- Ethan Westbrooks, Los Angeles Rams – TWO separate arrests. Arrested for suspected domestic violence. Second arrest, possession of stolen firearm.
- Trevone Boykin, Seattle Seahawks – TWO separate arrests. Arrested for possession of marijuana, public intoxication. Second arrest, probation violation.
- Willie Snead, New Orleans Saints – DWI involving crash (blood alcohol content .125).
- Damien Wilson, Dallas Cowboys – Charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (after pointing a rifle at a man).
- D’Onta Foreman, Houston Texans – Possession of Marijuana and unlawful carrying of a gun.
- Sean Smith, Oakland Raiders – Charged with felony assault (stomped on sister’s boyfriends head).
- Michael Bowie, New York Giants – Arrested for domestic assault and battery. Accused of grabbing girlfriend by the neck and throwing her down to the ground.
Those are only a few of the notable arrests, other stories behind arrests include: poking the eye of a security officer while obstructing a police investigation, attacking a man for criticizing his driving, or carrying a concealed weapon into a waterpark. Do these players not realize the millions they make a year mean nothing in the eyes of the law?
Let’s take a step back, forget the players’ names, occupations, and how much money they make and look at the types of charges and numbers they’ve racked up so far in 2017.
- Assault / Battery – 5
- Disorderly Conduct – 3
- Domestic Violence – 4
- Drugs – 7
- DWI – 5
- Weapons Charges – 4
- Resist/Elude/Interfere – 4
- Miscellaneous* - 3
*Suspended License, Violate Court Order, Probation Violation
Do you really want to idolize these individuals? Yes, everyone is human and makes mistakes, but throwing your girlfriend down by the neck is extreme. We must open our eyes and recognize that these people can’t be idolized by the children of today because they’ll begin to accept these behaviors and think they’re okay. Their behavior may be debatable on the field but this track record is not acceptable off the field.
