The News Is Being Treated Like A Business And The Consequences Are Real

The news used to be about facts, but now it's all about opinions, clickbait, and profits.

No, my fellow liberals, this will not be another expose about the blatant lies and half-truths of Fox News. Today, we will be talking about the mainstream media as a whole. These days, it seems that the news media is least trusted than ever, with all the talk of "fake news" and other things of the sort. It seems that the media has simply lost interest in giving you the facts, so I'm going to try and explain why I think that the mainstream media has lost its luster.

First of all, the mainstream media no longer gives you straight facts. They take the news of the day and filter it through their own respective agendas, and by the time that process is complete, they're not selling you news anymore, but their opinion.

These days, there's a news station for whichever political leaning you happen to be on. Since people don't like being told things they disagree with, news media has adapted to simply not do that, in order to maintain their viewing audiences. Because of this, people who watch different news networks may not only differ in opinion, they may even disagree on what the facts are at all.

The second reason that the media is losing quality is the 24-hour news cycle. Sure, news all the time sounds great on paper, but if you have nothing hard hitting to report, then you just stick to the same stories you've been milking. This leads to wild claims and speculation being passed off as a possibility, as once again, the media needs viewers. The 24-hour news cycle also leads to a race to publish a story first.

The advent of the internet has made news companies scramble for views on their pages, oftentimes publishing unconfirmed stories or even ones that are incomplete. In the event of breaking news, they don't even wait for the full story; they just type a few sentences and follow it up with "more to come" or something along those lines.

This race to the top of the trending page has really hurt investigative journalism.

While being one of the best ways to get those hard-hitting stories, it simply takes too long to actually, you know, investigate something. This is because the news needs a story right this second, slow news days are unacceptable, we need to keep our viewers happy, or they might watch some other news station.

That's the root of the problem; the media is being treated like a business.

Where truth used to be the deciding factor, now it's the bottom line. If anything is ever going to get better, we have to hold our media accountable when they mess up or try to slip one by us, because just as the media is a government watchdog, we can be theirs. So if you're not happy with your news, stop watching, because nothing is better at getting to the big business than hitting them right in the wallet.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
