Why do we make New Year’s resolutions?
Every year most people make New Year’s resolutions. They tell themselves that they are going to do things such as lose weight or become a better person.
The reason I think people make New Year’s resolutions is because they think that since it’s a New Year, they can be a different person. When reasonably thinking this through, one will see that the start of a new year will not magically make you a better person.
Becoming a better person will take more than just the start of a new year.
Losing weight is also a New Year's resolution I find to be a bit cliche and pointless. Why wait until the beginning of the year to lose weight rather than do it during the previous year? That plan to lose weight will just end up being pushed to the beginning of the next new year yet again.
People see the start of a new year as the start of new experiences.
Hence, the reason they make their New Year’s resolutions things like losing weight and being a good person. These things will be new experiences for them, even if they don't follow through.
I don’t know what other people’s reasons for making New Year’s resolutions are, but I do believe, if reasonable and possible, that they are great ways to motivate yourself at the start of a new year.
