New Year's: a holiday celebrating something so simple, a new year. But why do we really celebrate the new year? The new year is a time to create a resolution. It's a chance to decide what about yourself you want to change, or what about yourself you want to make better or improve. But in reality, New Year's is a sham.
What is authentic about New Year's? Nothing. Because spoiler alert: every day is new.
Each year we make our resolutions. We want to eat healthier. We want to work out more. We want to stop a bad habit. We want to do better in school.
We want to better ourselves.
That is exactly why New Year's is a sham.
Every day is an opportunity to better ourselves. Every day is a chance to change something about yourself. If you want to change something, then the minute that you decide you want to change it is when you should start. If you want to quit drinking you shouldn't say, "Oh, it's December 15th I can have this drink and stop after New Year's." You should want to stop then and there.
New Year's completely distorts the real purpose of wanting to better yourself or change something.
When making New Year's resolutions people forget that changing something about yourself is a daily struggle and a daily battle. It's a mental game. If you want to start eating healthier you need to have the self discipline to be able to resist unhealthy foods.
And kissing someone right at the new year? What is that about?
You start the new year by kissing someone, now if you're in a relationship that's slightly understandable. Because this is a person you want to spend the year with. But what about the people that run around looking for anyone to kiss? If the new year is all about committing yourself to something whether it's a change or an improvement, why search for a random to kiss if you're not going to commit to that person?
When the new year comes people make plans to commit to new goals, but none of it is consistent. New Year's is a sham.
But hey, if you need an excuse to throw a party, wear a nice outfit, or just get drunk, then New Year's is the holiday for you.
If you are some of the few who actually stick to their resolutions then good for you. So many people don't have that kind of will power. But if it's only a few days in and you've already broken your resolution, don't worry. Because tomorrow is a new day. And another chance for you to better yourself and make that change.
So cheers to you and cheers to the New Year.
