New Year's Has Grown On Me

Growing up, New Year's was a time to drink sparkling apple cider and wear glasses with the year on them, but now it means so much more.

I never used to think much of the “New Year” or “New Year’s Resolutions.” But as I grow older, the idea resonates with me more and more. There is no better way to look back at the last 12 months and prepare for your future. To recognize what went right, and what went wrong. New Year's is significant and most definitely meaningful.

Just like any other year, 2017 flew by. This year brought happiness, excitement, sadness, and most of all, the best memories.

2017 has taught me that people are fleeting and that some people aren’t meant to stay in your life. You will never be able to chase after people who aren’t meant to stay in your life. And sometimes people’s true colors are brought out and you really see why they aren’t meant to stay. Be thankful for the part they played in your life, but let them go.

Let go of what’s not supposed to happen. I think that has been the greatest lesson of 2017. I’ve learned to be open to new experiences, but also not to hold on to the past. Live, learn, and let go. It’s hard to let go of things we think we want, but sometimes it’s the very thing we must do.

Take chances. And take a lot of them.

Even if it doesn’t work out, at least you can say that you tried. You can say you gave your all, put forth your best effort, and so what, it didn’t work out! There’s no shame or regret in that. Be blunt, open, and honest.

The best thing about 2017 has been all the people who have showed or remained my best friends. When you open yourself up to meeting new people, life surprises you. Being that I just started my first semester at college, so many people in my life are new, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Even though I may have just met some of these people, they were meant to be my best friends for life. Making new friends is never a bad thing! With each stage of our lives, we grow. We outgrow some friendships and new ones follow us in our new stage of life.

2017 has been good to me. It’s taught me to make the best of every situation, and always to be my authentic self. I couldn’t ask for more. With that said, going forward, I am thankful for everything that happened in 2017.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
