So, it's January 3rd, have you already "broken" your New Year's resolution to cut out carbs, stop drinking soda, or go to the gym every day? Probably, and here's why.
You kept telling yourself all towards the end of 2018 that once it was January 1st, you'd change. You'd start that new diet and workout program, you'd do yoga, read more, and spend less time on social media. But January is here and you're still unmotivated.
I know this because this used to be me.
I stopped making my New Year's resolutions that my mental disorders told me to choose. I stopped making promises to myself that involved losing weight and cutting out food groups because it left me miserable and feeling lifeless.
Now, when I want something, I don't set a time limit on my goals. I avoid putting a start date like a new week or tomorrow. I start at that moment.
If I want to start reading more, then I go to Barnes and Noble and buy myself a book. If I want to stop drinking coffee, then I do it cold turkey. If I want to create more space for myself and a healthier environment, then I cut out the things that are harming me, just like that.
For me, that means no more "healthy/diet" related New Year's resolutions.
2019 should be a year about doing the things that set our soul on fire without thinking twice; every dream requires a sacrifice.
If this sounds aggressive or like I am attacking you, then good. Maybe this is exactly what you needed to hear. Stop worrying about the size of your thighs or the food on your plate, and start focusing on the things that are going to fill your heart with love and joy. I promise you, no "Skinny Tea" or "21-Day Detox" is going to do that.
By no means am I saying to quit the gym or eat like garbage, but what I am saying is do these things because they make you feel strong, not because your New Year's resolution is to lose weight and gain happiness because of it. I've been there, done that, doesn't work (for me, at least).
So, I'm writing this to tell you to take control of your life. If you want something, go after it now. Whether it's January 1st or on a Tuesday afternoon in April, stop waiting until tomorrow. Go read that book, call your grandparents, go on a drive with your friend who you haven't seen in a while, or even the one you see far too often.
Stop waiting for it. Stop wishing for it. Start working for it.
Now is the perfect time to change your life. It's not because it's January; it's because there is no time like the present. Do not take that for granted.
