Bittersweet Endings

Drifting Apart

Dear High School Best Friend,

Middle school was where it all began, and unfortunately college is where it ended. You made all of those years of our friendship so special. I can honestly say that I am not mad that we drifted. Sadly, that's the normal thing that happens when you grow up. I don't know why life didn't have a longer relationship for us. But, the relationship that we did share was worth all the memories, jokes, and laughter.

You know that I will never forget you, and I will always be here if you ever need me. Life just had a different plan for us, and that's okay because we're both still happy. You were always there for me whenever I needed you, whether it was to cry on your shoulder and eat ice cream when my boyfriend and I got into a fight or make fun of each other for twenty minutes straight. We had the type of friendship that rarely had its fights, and that's what made it so special.

High school is where we became closest. Every class that we had together ended up in us dying laughing and getting yelled at by our teacher to shut up. Our friendship was a never ending joke. There's no other way to describe it. As senior year approached, we didn't have any classes together and we began to drift. But, at the end of the day we knew we always had each other's back. Sadly, by the end of our senior year, we barely talked. It was neither one of our fault. We just made knew friends, and that's okay because that's how life goes. By the end of the summer, we had already drifted too far apart and it was no surprise that college separated us further.

Now here we are, going into our sophomore year of college and there's so much that we don't even know about each other anymore. It's crazy knowing that you never met my boyfriend and we never met each other's college friends. We were focused on getting good grades and making new friends. We didn't drift on purpose, it sadly just happened.

A friendship like ours was a relationship that can never be replaced. My only wish to you is to make your dreams come true because you are an amazing person that deserves the world. Although, we are not in each other's lives anymore, there was a reason that we were there for each other for many years. We have many memories that I will always cherish and never forget. Thank you for putting up with my crazy ass for as long as you did, I truly appreciate everything you did for me.

Love,

Your High School Best Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
