Making the decision to install a positive change in your life is a fantastic notion. If the start of a new year is what inspires you to make a change in your life, that is fine. My problem with New Year’s resolutions is that individuals tend to have a difficult time following through with their goals and they begin to fade after a matter of months. If you are making a lifestyle change to better your life, it should be something that you continue to work on and follow through with the entire year and even the rest of your life.
The most common resolutions that people make are associated with weight loss, exercise and eating habits. If you truly want to lead a healthy life style, beginning a new trendy diet at the end of the year that you break just moments into 2017 won’t necessarily help you to meet your goals. The same principle tends to apply to exercising and going to the gym as well. My mom and I have noted the extremely influx of gym-goers at the start of the new year. It is always so exciting to see all of the new energy and motivation. However, the enthusiasm and the number of people exercising drastically decreases in just a matter of weeks. For this reason we usually call these people that quickly stray from their new-found gym regimen “The Januarys.”
Regardless of the changes you want to see in your life, the most important part of setting goals is to follow through with the steps it takes to achieve them. If you want to improve your relationships, your work ethic, your GPA, your health, your mentality, whatever it may be, you will need true determination.
Set small, realistic goals that you are passionate about. These sort of goals will help you keep a positive mindset and reduce your chances of getting discouraged and giving up on your lifestyle change prematurely. You can make the decision to make a change in your life at any time. You don’t have to wait for the beginning of a new year. The most important part of making a resolution isn’t the timing; it’s about your journey to success.
