Fans of Daredevil were introduced to The Punisher—a gritty, ex-military antihero played by Jon Bernthal—in season two of the Marvel series. Bernthal essentially stole the show with his intense, nuanced performance as Frank Castle—a man who lost his family to gang violence and was on a mission to dole out revenge. The Punisher series will follow Castle as he attempts to find the persons directly responsible for his family’s murder, while evading the various law enforcement agencies that want him captured, or dead. The series does not have a release date yet (but you can watch the trailer that recently dropped below).
Here’s what you can expect from the newest, upcoming addition to the MCU on Netflix:
1. The Punisher probably won't tie into The Defenders.
Okay, so, The Defenders was awesome. Sure, the plot was contrived and Sigourney Weaver wasn't the scariest of villains, but us fans got to see our favorite superheroes interact and make fun of one another. Don't expect Frank Castle to run into Danny Rand while picking up Chinese food at the Royal Dragon. First of all, Frank Castle has been presumed dead. Second of all, Frank Castle—if alive—is a wanted man. And third, while the Defenders fought and won against the Hand, Frank is fighting something much more personal and specific—his past. The Punisher's showrunner, Steve Lightfoot, confirmed that the series will be the "grittiest" in the Netflix Marvel Universe.
2. Karen Page
According to IMDb, our favorite investigative journalist, Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll), will be in every single episode of The Punisher. The series will most likely build off of the tentative friendship Frank and Karen built in season two of Daredevil; but don't expect their relationship to get off to a good start. The last time these two kids spoke, Karen was telling Frank he was dead to her.
3. Micro
Frank's right-hand man and technological expert, Micro, will play a large role in the series. Micro and Frank may not see eye-to-eye on everything, and apparently they'll butt heads once or twice, but ultimately the two men share similar goals.
4. Lots of Killing
If you don't like violence, then The Punisher isn't the show for you. Frank Castle is known for being brutal. He'll shoot a "maggot low-life" in the head, point blank. Showrunner Steve Lightfoot has assured viewers that the violence won't be gratuitous. However, Castle (as Bernthal plays him) will be a "physical" character. Viewers will need to decide for themselves whether they support Castle, despite his unsavory methods. This also places a necessary burden on the writing team to flesh out Frank's character and let viewers into his psyche—which could only lead to better television.
