Honestly? I'm the type of girl who loves to indulge in romantic comedies, The Bachelor(ette), and Keeping up with The Kardashians. I'm not going to lie.
On the other hand, my boyfriend loves action movies, thrillers, and documentaries, so you can guess how that goes. However, one night he suggested I watch Netflix's "Black Mirror." Yes, our tastes in shows and movies can really differ at times, but I decided I'd give it a try. After all, it was the week before finals season and I was doing everything I could to procrastinate my studying.
Let's fast forward to about two hours later. I had just finished my second episode in a row when I discovered that, surprisingly, I was hooked.
"Black Mirror" is complicated to briefly explain, which is all the more reason to watch it. Essentially, every episode is a different plot, so you can watch the show in any order. The episodes are also an hour long, which means they're like mini movies.
The content can be pretty heavy, however. I can usually only watch up to two episodes at a time. While each episode portrays different characters battling different issues, there are a few central themes. Mainly, we see the dangers of technology, and just how corrupt our society has become. I swear, I need a minute or two of silence after each episode in order to digest the content. The A+ acting also really contributes to the show's greatness.
The first episode I watched was the first episode of season three. As the hour went by, I found myself becoming more and more terrified. But it's not a horror show with clowns or haunted houses or creepy dolls.
It's a show that truthfully portrays the direction that our world is headed towards.
And as you know, our world isn't headed towards the brightest future.
That is why I was terrified. I thought about my own life and the number of times I reach for my phone each day, the number of likes people strive to get, and the number of followers that supposedly matter. The first episode I watched encompassed all of these ideas, and everything that happened wasn't so far from the truth. I grew more and more terrified because of how cringe worthy some parts were and how frustrated I was with the main character. But she wasn't that far off from some people in this world.
"Black Mirror" is a wake up call. I only hope it will help us come to a halt, and eventually, put us on a different path.
