So we've all have cut the cord at this point and been watching our shows and movies on streaming apps. The one that has been part of our lives is Netflix. It was cheaper than cable and we were getting content that weren't being showed on TV. Unfiltered stories with that push boundaries and we could binge watch it within the span of a weekend. However recently this year, there has been a lot of competition coming for Netflix's necks.
Disney+ | Start Streaming November 12www.youtube.com
Disney has been snatching up all these properties left and right. There's so much they still haven't done and so they thought why not make our own app. They are putting up over six hundred titles from their parent networks, Pixar, Marvel, Lucas Film, and Walt Disney. Even the movies that have been in the vault are going to be on the app. They are also creating new content for Disney+ like High School Musical: The Series and Hawkeye and Winter Soldier. They're also doing reboots and revivals of Disney Channel Classics like Lizzie McGuire and The Proud Family (My childhood content in a nutshell). And you can have it all for the low cost of $6.99 a month and there's even going be a student discount. That's a pretty great deal for us to jump and this is some competition for Netflix to worry about.
Will Netflix Survive Disney+?www.youtube.com
Netflix hasn't been in the best place right now. Their prices have gone up every year, they're canceling shows people love but don't give proper promotion to. They put out pilots that no one asked for and end up scrapping anyways. People have unsubcribed as the library has gotten smaller and go to other content apps like Hulu, who also has a bundle deal with Disney+. Now they have Disney taking their content off the app and you have companies making their own apps and taking their content back. Disney is taking back their original movies for their app. NBC Universal is taking back their movies and shows, including Friends and the Office, and Warner Media are taking their movies and shows off as well, including the CW shows like the Flash, All American, and Charmed.
So is this the death of Netflix? Yes and No. With the way things are going right now, there could be some changes coming to the platform. Binge watching isn't the same anymore and the every week release schedule still works. Also, the amount of shows you have on the platform versus the amount of originals is low. Cut the budget and stick to the shows you do have rather than throw millions of dollars into projects that no one will watch, which leads to my other point, promotion. Netflix barely promote their shows that are new or have low key moderate success. If you want shows to meet your expectations, then put the money into promoting it. Do not spend $100 million dollars for a series to keep it on your network for another year when the original owners are going to take it back. You know what show I'm talking about, i.e we need the break.
The world has moved onto streaming and if Netflix wants to keep the door open, they have to step up or step down.
