Picture this: two seventh graders gossiping and drinking soda on a Thursday night. One, an extremely talented musician, and the other, an eager audience. These were the kind of days I craved to spend with my friend, Grace.
Grace, the shy little blonde girl in my Computer Literacy class, soon became one of my dearest friends. It all started the day that I slipped her a ripped piece of notebook paper and smoothly wrote: "What is your number?"... not creepy or anything. From that point on (once we got past the awkward stage), we were inseparable. Not only did we bond with the fact we just so happened to both be under five feet, but also our love for country music.
I had never been a huge fan until I met Grace who had a passion for all things country. Our favorite artist, Kacey Musgraves, is still to this day a trending topic of discussion for us. And just like any other set of best friends, we soon established "our" song…"Follow Your Arrow" by Kacey Musgraves. After weeks of Grace patiently teaching me the basic chords on the acoustic guitar, we were finally able to play the song together. Every time we got together, we would spend hours searching for songs to cover together. She attempted to teach me harmonies, but due to my lack of musical talent, this ultimately failed.
Once high school came, we went our separate ways: me to a Catholic school, and Grace to the public high school. Though we still lived just five minutes away, we seemed to drift a bit. However, I always knew if I needed something I could count on Grace for advice or a smile.
As the years went by in high school, we slowly found our way back to one another, and I couldn’t believe how much she had grown as a person. Not only was she a smart, beautiful and talented girl but always so positive as well. When I heard that she would be going to Belmont to study music, I didn’t doubt it for a single second.
Throughout the past eight years, Grace and I have grown up together in so many ways. And the best part is that we got to do it together. Distance and different schools were never something that stopped us from being a constant support system in each other’s lives.
As you’re reading this article, you are probably thinking of your “Grace”; the person who has been your rock in times of trouble, your biggest supporter in the stands of your big games and your source of laughter. The sense of pride I feel every time I see her up on the stage singing her ORIGINAL songs, I see the little 12-year-old girl who was so patient in sharing her love of music with me.
This is where I absolutely advocate all of you to check out her profile on YouTube, which I will link below. We all need a friend as passionate as Grace in our lives, and it is clear in her songs and the way she lives such a positive life that she is a great example of a role model.
To everyone reading this, keep your Grace close because she is the best type of friend you’ll meet.
